Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

An intensive care unit (ICU) is a special department of a hospital or health care facility that provides intensive care medicine. ICUs are equipped with advanced medical technology and staffed with highly trained healthcare professionals to provide around-the-clock care to critically ill patients.

Patients in ICUs are typically those with severe or life-threatening illnesses or injuries that require constant monitoring, life support, and medication to maintain their vital functions. Conditions that may require ICU care include:

• Heart failure
• Respiratory failure
• Severe infections
• Organ failure
• Major surgery or trauma

In an ICU, patients are typically cared for in individual rooms that are equipped with sophisticated monitoring equipment, ventilators, and other life-saving devices. Nurses and doctors in ICUs are highly specialized in critical care medicine and are trained to manage the complex needs of critically ill patients.

The goal of ICU care is to stabilize the patient’s condition, prevent complications, and promote recovery. Once the patient’s condition has improved, they may be transferred to a less intensive care unit or to a regular hospital ward.
